LITTLEON, Colo. — A deadly crash in Littleton claimed the life of a teenager on Saturday night.
The crash happened on West Mineral Avenue between Santa Fe Drive and South Broadway Street.
Police said the driver of an SUV was speeding westbound on Mineral Avenue, lost control and slammed into a tree in a median.
Witnesses told police the Suburban may have been involved in a street race prior to the collision.
“We’re looking into the possibility this may have been the end result of a street race or kids messing around with vehicles and exceeding the speed limit,” Littleton police Cmdr. Trent Cooper said. “We found the (second) vehicle and the driver of that vehicle, but we’re getting conflicting information on exactly how many were in it and who.”
Police are also investigating the possibility of drugs or alcohol, pending toxicology test results.
On Sunday, friends of the victim created a makeshift memorial near the crash site. Friends identified the victim as Evan Carlson, 18, a recent graduate of Heritage High School.
“My heart and prayers go out to the Carlson family,” said Gywnn Tipton, a Heritage High student. “I knew his face and he was always smiling. It’s really impacting the whole Heritage community.”
Carlson was an athlete at the school. His former football coach said Carlson was going to attend the University of Northern Colorado in the fall.
