GLENDALE, Colo. -- Police sounded the alarm about the public’s safety after a thief stole a semiautomatic rifle and hundreds of rounds of ammunition from an apartment two weeks ago.

The theft happened during a spring break party at a luxury apartment building at 4550 Cherry Creek Drive South. Police said mainly Denver East High School students attended the party March 28.

A 16-year-old hosted the celebration while his father was out of town. The party ended with a potential threat to the public after police said a guest stole a semiautomatic rifle with a scope attached and 200 rounds of ammunition.

The next day, the son discovered his dad’s rifle case was open and the weapon was missing.

Denver Public Schools is now taking precautions at the school, with extra safety patrols. It’s also working with police to identify party-goers through photos from that night.

But there’s also disappointment from the district that Glendale police brought the school into the investigation when there’s no proof their students are involved.

“Law enforcement has not made any arrests, but they made this, I’m not sure if the best word is ‘inference’ or ‘possible correlation’ between East High students at a party and a weapon being stolen,” DPS spokesman Will Jones said.

Glendale police said their priority is to protect the public.

“We had a bunch of high schoolers attending this party and we have not recovered this weapon yet. It could get in the wrong hands,” Glendale Police Lt. Roy Martin said.

Police hope the lure of cash will tempt a student who knows something to give up a classmate. Metro Denver Crime Stoppers is offering up to $2,000 for information leading to the arrest and conviction of a suspect.

Anyone with information is asked to call Crime Stoppers at 720-913-7807.
