DENVER — Denver police were trying to figure out exactly what happened to a man Monday night after witnesses watched his car coast to a stop, before the driver jumped out with his body engulfed in flames.

Multiple witnesses told officers that the man’s car had slowly driven off the road near South Platte River Drive and Florida Avenue about 7 p.m., the Denver Police Department reported. A man, who was on fire, exited the vehicle.

Several bystanders helped extinguish the flames, DPD said. Witnesses said the man was speaking, but they were unable to learn what had happened.

The victim was hospitalized with burns. His condition was not released.

Firefighters arrived to find the interior of the vehicle still partially on fire. They put that blaze out, but were unable to see how it had started. It did not appear the car had been involved in an accident, DPD said.

Investigators remained on the scene late Monday.
