BOULDER, Colo. — The Boulder Police Department announced Friday it has arrested a suspect in connection with a case of a door-to-door solicitor who is accused of attacking a woman inside her home.

Derick Robert Tappe, 26, was taken into custody early Friday in Evans and is being held in the Weld County Jail on $100,000 bond. He is facing felony charges of criminal attempt-sexual assault, first-degree burglary and unlawful sexual contact with force. Boulder Police say Tappe has criminal records in several other states.

The incident happened Wednesday in the 1800 block of 22nd Street. The woman told police a solicitor was seeking money for a charity when she says he pushed his way inside and started to grop her.

Hoping the man would leave if she gave him money, the woman went to her bedroom but was followed by the man and attacked. She fought off the man and he fled the home. The woman was not injured.

Investigators worked overnight trying to identify Tappe, who works for magazine sale company Encore. Employees of the company, which has salespeople travel the country selling selling magazines and seeking donations, were staying in Evans.

Tappe might have encountered other residents, though no other reports have been filed. Anyone with information is asked to call Det. Jeremy Frenzen at 303-441-1890 or Northern Colorado Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477.
