FREDERICK, Colo. — Police confirmed that the 3-year-old boy who was rushed to the hospital Monday died of an accidental gunshot wound to the head.

The Weld County Coroner’s Office identified the victim as Sheine Steine.

Officers were called to Steine’s home in Frederick around 10 a.m. Monday when his mother called 911 saying he had fallen and was bleeding from a head wound.

The child’s mother, Dione Warren, said the boy was not breathing.

Police and paramedics responded and the 3-year-old was taken to Good Samaritan Hospital in Lafayette. He died around 11:15 a.m., Frederick Police Chief Gary Barbour said.

Investigators said they found a gun near the child in the home and “it appeared to have been fired,” but they did not say who shot the gun. Police are still investigating the incident, but Barbour did answer several of the media’s questions on Tuesday.

“We have no reason to believe this was anything other than accidental firing of the gun while the child handled it,” Barbour said.

Barbour also said the weapon was a legally-owned .40 caliber Glock, model 23 handgun, and it belonged to the child’s stepfather, who was not at home at the time of the shooting.
