COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – A pit bull that bit a nine-month-old girl on the face on Sunday will be euthanized, a spokesperson for the Pikes Peak Humane Society said.
Emergency officials were called to a home near Rush, Colo. at around 2:30 p.m. on a report of a child that was bit by the family dog.
Officials say the girl sustained wounds to the left side of her face and will need major reconstructive surgery.
Authorities say the pit bull belongs to the child’s grandfather. He was served a summons for unlawful ownership of a dangerous dog.
“He said that it was just a sheer accident that the little girl was not provoking the dog at all…that she just ran from the dog and the dog kind of snapped,” said Chief Jeremy Gardner with the Tri-County Fire Protection District.
Rabies tests on the dog are pending.
