DENVER — A pedestrian was killed while crossing an intersection on Sunday night and a 17-year-old has been arrested in an accident that was related to street racing, the Denver Police Department said.

The crash happened near West Alameda Avenue and Morrison Road about 9 p.m.

Police initially said the crash was a hit-and-run but a vehicle was about 50 yards away from the impact of the crash.

The teen was allegedly driving with only a temporary permit and ran from the scene on foot after the accident, but was arrested an hour later when family members turned him in, police said.

Police said at a news conference Monday morning that the victim was 26 years old, and the suspect was arrested for vehicular homicide, hit-and-run, reckless driving and drag racing.

“It’s a problem at night,” said Hector Hernandez, who lives near accident scene. “Basically you got people just drag racing and apparently I don’t see no protection here being from police officers.”

Police are looking for a black sedan seen racing with the teen’s car at high speed from South Perry Street to Lowell Boulevard on Alameda Avenue when the pedestrian was struck and killed.

They’re also asking for any surveillance video from nearby businesses.

The victim’s name has not been released.
