BOULDER, Colo. – A man in northeast Boulder County risked his life Monday morning when he plunged into a partially-frozen lake to rescue his dog.

Mountain View Fire Rescue crews responded to Terry Lake, north of Longmont, shortly before 11 a.m. after receiving a report of the dog falling through thin ice.

Laura McConnell, spokeswoman for Mountain View Fire Rescue, says the owner grabbed a life jacket and inner tube, and went into the frigid water to rescue his pet.

Both got out of the water safely and were treated for cold-related injuries, McConnell said.

Authorities say pet owners should always call 9-1-1 if their dog falls through ice, and never attempt to rescue them on their own.
