DENVER — New shuttle buses are coming to the 16th Street Mall.

The buses, which run from Union Station to the Civic Center Station, transport about 4,500 of passengers along the pedestrian mall each day, RTD said.

The 36 new vehicles will be even more comfortable than before. The old buses will be replaced with battery-powered electric buses that can run all day without recharging.

Still holding true to the previous model, each bus will have three doors with 18 seats, including two wheelchair spaces. They can hold 112 riders in all. Each bus will have full air conditioning.

With so many people moving to Denver, having free transportation throughout the mall is necessary for tourists and those who work along the route.

RTD officials said the current buses are 16 years old and need to be retired.
