LAKEWOOD, Colo. -- A botched robbery sends a would-be criminal to the hospital after the store owner takes matters into his own hands.

At 7:00 pm Saturday night, two would-be robbers walked into the Cambio de Cheques at 7001 West Colfax in Lakewood, sprayed mace in the face of the store's owner, Yong Pak, and demanded money.

According to police, Pak grabbed his own gun and fired it at one of the suspects hitting him in the leg. The suspect suffered non-life threatening injuries.

Neighboring businesses tell FOX31 Denver, the owner of the check cashing store has been robbed three times over the past few months and last night the store's owner finally had enough.

"I know he's been robbed a couple of times," says Cory Riggs, owner of Unchain The Game Ltd. "One time he had someone waiting for him as he got out of his car first thing in the morning," Riggs says.

Colorado's 'Make my Day' law allows you to use deadly force against anyone who tries to take what's yours.

"I think the owner was pretty well prepared this time," says Lyle Schad who witnessed the attempted robbery Saturday night from a nearby home.

He says Pak was prepared for this situation. "I don't think they'll come back if they know the owner has a gun and he's willing to use it," he says. “Even when the second suspect took off on foot, Pak still didn't back down. He stepped off the porch pointing the gun around making sure there was nobody else around."

Although Colorado's make my day law does not yet apply to businesses, Lakewood police say the owner won't likely be charged.

Lakewood police declined to give out any new details about the investigation accept to say they believe this attempted robbery is connected to a string of robberies in the metro area over the last few months.

In each case the suspects sprayed mace in the face of the victims.

If you have any information about these crimes call Lakewood police.
