JACKSON, Miss. — Workers building a parking garage at Mississippi Medical Center discovered the bodies of more than 1,000 people, thought to be patients from the former Mississippi State Lunatic Asylum.
The discovery was made last week, the Clarion Ledger newspaper reported. Since the asylum was moved from the site in 1935, the bodies have been there for at least the better part of a century, historians said.
None of the bodies have been identified, the hospital said.
The State Lunatic Asylum opened on the site in 1855, housing 150 patients. After the end of the Civil War, it expanded to house more than 300 residents in a district known as Asylum Hill.
The cost of relocating the bodies is such that the school will likely leave them where they are and move the parking garage to another site, the Clarion Ledger reported.
