WASHINGTONVILLE, Pa. — A Pennsylvania woman was sentenced to up to 18 months in prison last week for obtaining helping her daughter get an illegal abortion.
Jennifer Ann Whalen, 39, pleaded guilty in August to obtaining miscarriage-inducing pills for her pregnant 16-year-old daughter, who did not want to have the child.
Whalen told police there was no abortion clinic in her area, and her daughter did not have health insurance to cover the procedure, the Press Enterprise newspaper of Bloomsburg reported.
Whalen was sentenced for violating a state law that requires abortions to be performed by physicians, Reuters reported. She was also fined $1,000 and ordered to perform 40 hours of community service after her release.
