LOS ANGELES — A traffic accident between a teenager and another woman on Sunday seemed minor — until thousands of bees came boiling out of a tree struck in the collision.

The two drivers got out of their cars to exchange information following the accident in La Canada Flintridge, Calif., KTLA reported. As they did so, angry bees from a hive upset in the crash began swarming.

One of the drivers, identified as a 51-year-old local woman, ran to the back of a nearby residence and jumped into a swimming pool. She waited in the pool until paramedics arrived, the station reported

The other driver, a 17-year-old girl, fell to the ground and was soon covered by the bees. A police officer was eventually forced to spray the girl with a fire extinguisher to drive the bees away. The girl was then able to run to safety.

Both women suffered hundreds of stings and were taken to a local hospital for treatment. Their conditions were not known.
