Deputy Dennis Wallace, 53, was found dead outside Modesto, with two gunshot wounds to the head, according to the sheriff’s department.
Wallace was on duty in a sheriff’s car when he called for backup from additional units to help with a suspicious person in a stolen Kia Rio.
Soon after, the suspect, David Machado, allegedly put a gun directly to Wallace’s head and shot him twice, the sheriff’s department reported.
“This was an execution,” the Modesto Bee quoted Stanislaus County Sheriff Adam Christianson as saying.
Wallace was a 20-year veteran of the force and was well-known in the community.
