KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- A 12-month old puppy from Missouri is recovering after being trapped in a car that was impounded for nearly a month.

USA Today reported that the puppy named "Kia" survived by eating trash left in a McDonald's bag in an abandoned Suburban. The terrier and schnauzer mix did not have access to water.

According to the Kansas City animal shelter, Kia is dehydrated and malnourished, but is expected to be alright. The long winter and cooler weather may have contributed to saving the puppy's life.

An employee at the city impound lot reportedly saw the puppy on Monday afternoon and called police who broke into the car and saved her.

Records show that the car was towed to the lot on April 8. Investigators are attempting to trace the car's license plates in an effort to find the owner.

The Kansas Pet Project is trying to find Kia a foster home after she is fully recovered.
