(CNN) — One crew member died when a Swedish boat training for the America’s Cup sailboat race capsized Thursday in San Francisco Bay, said Mindy Talmadge, a spokeswoman for the San Francisco Fire Department.
The Artemis Racing team’s wesbite identified the sailor as two-time Olympic medalist Andrew Simpson from Great Britain.
“The entire Artemis Racing team is devastated by what happened,” said Chief Executive Officer Paul Cayard. “Our heartfelt condolences are with Andrew’s wife and family.”
The statement said Simpson was trapped underneath the water by the boat, and doctors were unable to revive him.
He was 36, according to the Olympics website.
The 72-foot catamaran capsized adjacent to the ferry terminal, Talmadge said.
There were 10 other people on the boat who were all accounted for, Talmadge said. A second person was treated for cuts that were not life-threatening.
The next step in the America’s Cup is qualifying races, which are set to begin July 7 on San Francisco Bay.
