OSLO, Norway — A 26-year-old man pleaded guilty this week to tricking his pregnant ex-girlfriend into drinking a smoothie spiked with abortion pills.
The Local reported that the two people had previously ended their relationship, but then had casual sex after running into each other at a party. The woman, 20, became pregnant.
The man, whose name was not released, allegedly tried to get her to have an abortion, but she refused, court documents stated.
The man told the court that he tried to induce a miscarriage earlier, by giving his girlfriend abortion pills he had bought online while claiming that they were painkillers. That attempt was unsuccessful, he said.
“I read online that pills could cause deformities if they did not work,” he told the court. “I thought that if it was my fault that the child was born with major malformations, and I would not be able to live with that.”
The man later tried again with the tainted smoothie, The Local reported. After drinking the smoothie, the woman was hit by severe abdominal pain before miscarrying later that evening. The woman became suspicious and went to the doctor, where tests reportedly found traces of the drug in her body.
In pleading guilty, the man told the court he was full of regret but felt the deception was “the only way out.”
A ruling is expected in the case next week. The man faces up to seven years in prison.
