PORTAGE, Ind. -- An Indiana man was mauled to death by his own pit bull on Christmas Day, police reported.
Eddie Cahill, 40, was home with his two 8-year-old dogs, Fat Boy and Keylo, while his wife visited family, WGN reported. Cahill's wife returned home about 5 p.m. to find her husband dead in the living room, covered in dog bites.
Fat Boy was found to have blood in his mouth, she reported.
Animal control officers had to use a taser to get the dog under control, police said. The dog was held overnight for observation, and then euthanized at the family's request, WGN reported.
The victim's wife, Bianca Rodriguez, told reporters the dog had never caused trouble in the past. But a police report revealed that she told the first officer on scene that the dog was "violent and unpredictable."
The family characterized the incident as an accident.
“I don’t want people to think bad of pit bulls,” Rodriguez said. “It was a freak accident. He loved those dogs.”
