DENVER — Chipotle has stopped serving pork at one-third of its restaurants after a supplier was suspended for violating its standards.
Spokesman Chris Arnold said it’s the first time the company has stopped serving a topping for its burritos and bowls.
“We made the decision to stop serving pork rather than compromising our standards and serving conventionally raised pork,” Arnold said. “Our pork comes from pigs that are raised outdoors or in deeply bedded barns and without the use of antibiotics or added hormones.
“We could replace our pork with conventionally raised pork, but the animal welfare standards are significantly lower than our standards, and we simply aren’t willing to compromise on that.”
It’s not known how long it will last and which restaurants are affected.
Arnold said the carnitas accounts for about 6 percent to 7 percent of entree orders at the Denver-based chain.
