MAKASSAR, Indonesia — A mob of wild monkeys went on a rampage in a village in eastern Indonesia, entering houses and attacking residents.

The Associated Press reports seven people were hurt, one critically.

A spokesman for Sidendeng Rappang District in South Sulawesi province, says the surprise attack by about 10 monkeys happened in Toddang Pulu village.

A 16-year-old boy was badly bitten and is undergoing treatment in a hospital.

The report says officials believe the monkeys came from a nearby forest that is protected by a local. They say the monkeys are normally afraid of humans, so it’s unclear why they emerged and attacked.

The incident caused panic among villages.
