Coffee can make you live longer. That's what the largest study ever done on coffee is showing, but doctors say think twice before drinking too much.
The study was conducted by the National Cancer Institute and followed more than 400,000 people.
Researchers say coffee contains plenty of antioxidants than can fight disease, but other compounds found in coffee beans can also affect your health as well, so it’s not clear how it all happens.
In fact, a single cup a day lowers the risk of death by six-percent in men and 5 percent in women. Researchers say the strongest effect is in women who drink 4 to 5 cups per day, lowering the their risk of death by 16-percent.
Dr. Bhavani Shillara of Mile High OB/GYN says the good news for coffee drinkers must be taken with an extra shot of responsibility, especially for pregnant women.
“You’re able to handle the coffee, but the fetus isn’t able to handle the coffee as well and it does increase the rate of miscarriages,” said Shillara.
Dr. Shillara says coffee can also be dangerous for some people who have heart problems.
