DENVER -- In a matter of hours, the hit musical “The Book of Mormon” sold out it’s Denver performance, the first stop on it’s national tour.

The cast is amazed and humbled by the fan support. Grey Henson plays the part of Elder McKinley. He told Fox 31 Denver, “The show is really driven by the audience and the fans and the responses. To have that conversation with the audiences is something we’re really excited for.”

Henson is new to theater. He landed this role straight out of college. He said, “It’s been a wild wild amazing ride. I just graduated from Carnegie Mellon in Pittsburgh. I found out I got the job half way through my senior year and started rehearsals immediately after graduation. It’s been wild. I couldn’t ask for a better first job, because it is such a mega hit, and it’s fantastic, and the creative team is incredible, and the cast is so welcoming. I don’t feel like a rookie. I feel like I’m up there with the rest of them. It’s been great.”

But the stardom came with a cost. He had to spend his first day in Denver looking for something to wear on opening night. He revealed to Fox 31 Denver’s Deborah Takahara what he was wearing. Henson said, “I’m wearing J Crew. I just figured I’m going to need it for a while.”

He is right about that, the show keeps growing and picking up steam.

Some of the cast members have been on national tours before.

Like Gavin Creel, who plays the lead role. Creel told Fox 31 Denver, “I’ve done a tour once before. I guess the biggest difference between Broadway and being on the road is per diem… that’s it.. no one’s giving me money to buy my food when I’m in New York.”

One member of the cast even performed a back up role in the Broadway version of “The Book of Mormon.”

Jared Gertner then won a spot on the tour. He said you can expect this version to be slightly different than the Broadway version.

Gertner said, “In a lot of tours, they say do it just like they did on Broadway. With our show, they said we hired really unique funny talented people. Let’s see what they come up with. So everyone’s approach to the material is different  than the people in new York.. that’s the way I a look at it too.”

Creel added, “I’m friends with almost all the original Broadway cast, and they saw it and are so supportive and we feel like we’ve been given the blessing to come out and make it our own and to do it in Denver. This is the beginning. It’s going to be pretty special.”

While they’ve been busy perfecting their performances, they’ve had some time to have fun in Colorado.

The creators of “The Book of Mormon”, Matt Stone and Trey Parker, are from the metro area. They took the cast to Casa Bonita, which has been featured in their hit “South Park”. Stone told Fox 31 Denver, “Everyone wanted to go. We told them every Mexican restaurant is like Casa Bonita in Denver.”

Gertner said, “Wow! What a thrill. That place is crazy!” Creel added, “I think if that’s their source of inspiration, I am seeing everything more clearly now.”

The show runs through September 2nd in Denver, and will return in October of 2013.
