DENVER -- A 28-year-old man was killed after a SWAT team went into a residence to end an hourslong standoff in west Denver on Sunday night.

The six-hour standoff took place in the 300 block of South Alcott Street and much of that area remained closed as police investigated.

Police first got the call about a domestic situation and shots were fired shortly after 5:30 p.m. When they arrived, the man was inside the house refusing to come out.

A SWAT team made contact with the man and negotiated for several hours until it decided to go into the home in the attempt to end the standoff.

"Our SWAT officers entered the home just before 11. There was an exchange of gunfire. The suspect was struck and when paramedics went into the home to render aid, the suspect was pronounced at the scene," Denver police spokesman Doug Schepman said.

“When officers arrived on scene, they learned there had been shots fired at this location and the suspect injured himself. That suspect also had a felony warrant for his arrest."

It's not clear if the man shot himself or if he was hit by police. The two SWAT officers involved in the shooting have been placed on paid administrative leave.
