DENVER  — A man from the Occupy Denver camp at Civic Center Park told authorities on Friday that he had scabies, a contagious parasitic disease.

Officials say the man received medical treatment and his belongings were removed from the area across from the State Capitol.

The scabies mite can survive outside of the human body for up to two days and can survive in bedding and clothing, making ongoing cleaning of the area essential, said Denver Public Works spokesperson Ann Williams.

Scabies is only transmitted through direct skin-to-skin or close physical contact.

To prevent the spread of disease the city says it will continually power-wash the area and remove items.
