DENVER — A Grand Junction man was arrested Wednesday on suspicion of stealing $9,000 worth of brass urns from Memorial Gardens cemetery, the Mesa County Sheriff’s Office reported.

David Gillespie, 26, was held on $5,000 bond in the thefts of the urns, many of them left on the graves of war veterans. Gillespie is accused of selling 11 of the urns to a metal company for a total of $124, though the cemetery reported that the items are worth $600 each.

Gillespie told the company he had collected the urns from a Utah property owned by his deceased grandfather.
