MINATARE, Neb. — A Loveland man was killed and two others, including one from Lakewood, were injured when a large cottonwood tree snapped and fell on them in western Nebraska on Sunday, the Scottsbluff Star-Herald reported.

The Nebraska Game and Parks Commission said 49-year-old Matthew Weaver of Loveland died after the tree landed on him at Lake Minatare State Recreation Area.

The commission said 44-year-old Mark Pennell of Lakewood and 31-year-old Daniel Randall of Bayard, Neb., were injured.

Pennell was listed in critical condition Monday afternoon at Regional West Medical Center in Scottsbluff, Neb. Randall was hit on the head and suffered scrapes to his face. He was treated and released from the Scottsbluff hospital, the Star-Herald reported.

“All you heard was a little ‘pop, pop’ and the whole tree came down,” Randall told the newspaper. “It’s just a blessing, man, that I’m still here.”

One of the men was able to free himself and a good Samaritan used a tractor to lift the tree off the other two.
