LOUISVILLE, Colo. -- A woman died after being struck by a tree branch during a wicked windstorm on Tuesday, the Louisville Police Department said.

The 62-year-old woman, who was identified Thursday as Lucinda Spencer of Lafayette, was hit by the branch about 2 p.m. in the 400 block of Walnut Street.

Friends describe Spencer as a free-spirited woman who was extremely compassionate and empathetic.

"Lucinda was very beautiful soul," Spencer's friend, Vicktoria LaRiche, said. "She loved to do yoga. She was really into spirituality and fitness."

LaRiche said Spencer also loved to be outside, dance and practice yoga.

She worked as a home health nurse and was finishing classes to be a certified yoga teacher instructor.

For the past 15 years, Spencer lived with Frank Hodge on an organic farm in Layfayette.

"She was a high-spirited person, loved life and loved being fancy free," Hodge said. "(Spencer) loved the outdoors and that’s why we’re at this place."

That free spirit was also part of the reason Spencer decided to move away from the farm and into the apartment in Louisville.

When officers arrived, they found Spencer was barely conscious. She had been moving into an apartment and was resting under the tree when the strong wind gusts began.

Witnesses told police that a large branch broke off and hit Spencer in the head. She died Wednesday.

"I feel like she touched my life in a very beautiful way," LaRiche said of Spencer. "She was very loving. And was always there for anyone who needed her."

"She’ll be missed," Hodge said. "She was taken way to soon."

The Boulder County Coroner's Office and the cause and manner of death are pending further investigation.

Police said wind gusts up to 89 mph were reported in Louisville at the time of the incident.
