ELBERT COUNTY, Colo. (KDVR) – Two people died Friday when the cars they were driving collided head-on just east of Elizabeth.

The crash happened at CO-86 and County Road 21. An emergency call was placed to Colorado State Patrol at 8:54 a.m.

Two passengers from one of the vehicles were taken to the hospital. Their conditions are not known at this time.

CSP said one of the vehicles involved had been stopped by a trooper but drove away shortly before the crash. It’s unclear if there was a pursuit or how far the crash was from where the stop happened.

A witness told FOX31 they ran to help the people in the vehicles and a CSP trooper was already there.

This is a developing story. Details will be reported as they are received.
