DENVER -- A thief got more than they bargained for Sunday afternoon after stealing a van with a dead body inside.

The van was taken outside Brookshire House nursing home near Interstate 25 and Evans Avenue. No arrests had been made as of late Sunday.

Nursing home staffers said the van, set to transport a recently deceased nursing home resident, belongs to a funeral home.

The rightful driver stepped away from the van shortly after the body was loaded inside, according to staffers.

The body was meant to be prepared for a final goodbye. But instead of resting in peace, the remains became part of a criminal getaway.

Police found the van and body abandoned in an apartment building parking lot less than a half-mile from the nursing home.

People living in the area of Colorado Boulevard and Evans Avenue said they suspect the thief never knew what was in the back of the unmarked van until after taking off.
