GOLDEN, Colo. — A band instructor at Eaglecrest High School in Centennial has been arrested for allegedly having sex with a student, the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office said Thursday.

Authorities arrested Geoffrey Adam Banninger, 23, at his home in Golden on Wednesday.

The part-time band instructor is accused of having sex with a 16-year-old female student and authorities believe the incidents happened at Banninger’s home.

He was arrested on  suspicion of sexual assault on a child by one in a position of trust and for sexual assault on a child, pattern of sexual abuse. Both are class 3 felonies.

“Right now all we know of is the one victim,” sheriff’s spokesman Mark Techmeyer said. “If there are other victims, we’d certainly like to hear from them.

“Nothing else has come up in the course of the investigation, at this point, to make us believe that there are others.”

Banninger was fired by the Cherry Creek School District and had also been a volunteer coach with the Arvada High School band.

He is being held on a $5,000 bond.

Banninger’s arrest is the latest crisis for Cherry Creek Schools.

In January, two administrators at Prairie Middle School in Aurora were placed on leave after being charged with a misdemeanor each for failure to report suspected sexual assault of a student at the hands of teacher Brian Vasquez.
