DENVER (KDVR) — Police say a man killed in an early morning drive-by shooting at an Aurora home had just chased down two people he found stealing scooters in his backyard.

According to the Aurora Police Department, the 49-year-old man and his son were awoken to the thefts in progress and confronted the two people, who rode away on the stolen scooters.

“The man and his son chased the suspects in their pickup. During the chase, shots were fired at the pickup. The man and son returned home, at which point they noticed a vehicle drive by the front of the house and fire several rounds into the home. One bullet struck the man, fatally wounding him,” police said in a release Wednesday afternoon.

Police responded around 4:39 a.m. to the home in the 900 block of Paris Street, in the Del Mar Park neighborhood.

According to police, the officers performed life-saving actions, but the victim died at the scene.

SkyFOX flew over the scene Wednesday morning, seeing multiple police cars lined up on the street. A handful of people were on the corner speaking to police.

Police said they were investigating multiple scenes in connection, including yards nearby where the scooters were found. The suspects had not been identified as of Wednesday afternoon.

Police did not release any information about the son involved in the incident. The Arapahoe County Coroner’s Office will identify the victim.

Officers believe this was an isolated incident and there is no threat to the public.

East 10th Avenue was closed from Paris Street to Nome Street. All of Paris Street was closed from 10th Avenue to Del Mar Park. Aurora Central students, teachers and parents were asked to take 11th Avenue or 6th Avenue to Peoria to get to school.
