EDGEWATER, Colo. -- A man accused of sexually assaulting a girl was shot by Golden police near West 22nd Avenue and Jay Street on Tuesday, the Edgewater Police Department said.

Police said 40-year-old David E. Little sexually attacked the girl a few months ago in Golden and she was placed in a safe house in Edgewater.

Somehow, police said, the man tracked the girl down and he was spotted in the area Monday night. The girl notified police, who then followed the man Tuesday morning.

When he reappeared near the safe house, Little rammed the police cars several times and attempted to flee.

“The suspect in the case immediately came up firing rounds through the windshield and through the exterior window in his vehicle,” Edgewater police Chief John Mackey said.

At that point, the man opened fire on the Golden police officers, according to investigators. Officers fired back. The suspect was struck by one bullet and he was taken into custody shortly after.

“At this point, it looks like the officers are OK,” Mackey said.

The suspect was transported to a hospital for treatment and to be questioned by detectives. An arrest warrant had been issued by Golden police for the man. He also has prior reports against him regarding weapons.
