JEFFERSON COUNTY, Colo. — The principal at Ute Meadows Elementary School in Littleton was arrested for investigation of sex assault on a child.

“The alleged assaults occurred over ten years ago,” a sheriff’s office statement said. “Although the investigation is in the preliminary stages, there is no indication that any child who previously or currently attends Ute Meadows Elementary are victims.”

Steven Weigum, 55, faces charges of aggravated incest and sexual assault on a child by a person in a position of trust. He was in jail Tuesday night without bond. His first court appearance was scheduled for Wednesday morning.

The Jefferson County School District put him on administrative leave Tuesday. Administrators did not comment about his case. They sent a brief email to parents alerting them that the principal was on leave.

“It’s a shock hearing it. I mean, you trust that your taking your grand kids or your kids to a public school and nothing like this is going to happen,” Kevin St. Michael said.

He has a grandson who attends Ute Meadows, and like everyone else picking up students on Tuesday, he had no idea long-time principal Steven Weigum was in custody for alleged incest and sexual assault on a child. The Jeffco Sheriff’s Office said the alleged incidents happened more than ten years ago … and though they did overlap with Weigum’s time as principal at Ute Meadows … they say there is no reason to believe any students were ever involved.

“We understand it’s concerning to parents and again, this investigation is in the preliminary stages, but we have no indication at this point that there was anyone else involved except for one victim,” said Jeffco Sheriff’s Office spokesman Mark Techmeyer.
