NEW JERSEY — Many residents hit hardest by Hurricane Sandy are left stranded with gas shortages and transit shut-downs, making a trip to the polls a challenge. Damages across the East coast have forced some polling places to close or move.

According to Business Weekly, New Jersey’s lieutenant governor announced Monday that voters could email their ballots, a directive that extends electronic voting options currently available to military and overseas residents. 

With this option, many concerns arise with ballots being tampered with during transit.

“It’s about the worst form of voting that has so far been devised from a security point of view” computer scientest at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory told Business Weekly, “This is a lawsuit waiting to happen.”

The New York City Board of Elections is choosing to stick with traditional methods and redirecting people to new polling places through a constantly updating list on its website.

The Daily Beast reported that New York Governor Andrew Cuomo signed an emergency executive order allowing voters in New York to cast their ballots at any polling station in the state.

With the east coast continuing recovery efforts a week after the super storm hit, donations continue to pour in. The American Red Cross has taken in nearly $85 million so far to operate shelters and provide relief supplies to victims.

Meanwhile, Entertainment Weekly reported Monday that the cast of MTV’s “Jersey Shore” will reunite to host a one-hour live special on MTV called “Restore the Shore”. MTV has teamed up with the non-profit “Architecture for Humanity”, a relief program that helps redesign and rebuild areas impacted by natural disasters.
