HOUSTON (AP) – A one-armed, one-legged man in a wheelchair was shot and killed by a Houston police officer early on Saturday.

Houston’s KRIV FOX 26 reports that the double amputee waved a metal object that turned out to be pen before he was shot. Police spokeswoman Jodi Silva said the man cornered the officer inside a group home after officers were called to check on a disturbance.

Silva said the man was making threats while he was trying to stab the police officer with the pen, according to the Associated Press. The officer didn’t know the metal object was a pen at the time.

When the officer told the man to calm down, he didn’t listen to instructions and came “within inches to a foot” of the officer, Silva said.

The officer, Matthew Jacob Marin, was placed on administrative leave.
