EVANS, Colo. -- One man was killed in an officer-involved shooting early Thursday morning, law enforcement officials said.

The incident began about 1:30 a.m. near Highway 85 and 37th Street when Evans police officers responded to a trespassing report.

When officers arrived, they observed two men and contacted them. After several minutes, one suspect fled the stop and the second was taken into custody. The Evans officers gave chase and lost sight of the second suspect as he crossed a fence north of the scene.

A perimeter and reinforcements from the Greeley and LaSalle police departments, and the Weld County Sheriff's Office were called in to assist.

Around 2:45 a.m., officers observed a male suspect in the area and an Evans officer confronted the suspect. Greeley police said the suspect then fired a weapon at the officer and fled.

Around 30 minutes later, officers spotted the suspect again and challenged the man.

The suspect reportedly shouted to officers, "Shoot me, kill me!" and raised his weapon at officers, according to Greeley police.

Initial reports indicate two Greeley police officers and one LaSalle officer then fired their weapons at the suspect.

The suspect suffered gunshot wounds and officers administered CPR to him while waiting for medical teams to arrive.

The suspect was transported by ambulance to North Colorado Medical Center and was pronounced dead at 4:07 a.m.

No police officers were injured.

The Weld Coroner's Office identified the man who died as 37-year-old Luke Nathan Miller. Police said an initial investigation has revealed the suspect was a parole absconder wanted on felony charges.

Several police and emergency vehicles were in the area, which was cordoned off with crime scene tape.

Highway 85 was closed between 37th and 42nd streets as law enforcement from the Evans and Greeley police departments, the Weld County Sheriff's Office and the Colorado State Patrol investigated the shooting.
