THORNTON, Colo. — A chase of a stolen work truck ended in a three-vehicle crash that closed a busy intersection Tuesday morning, the Adams County Sheriff’s Office said.

The sheriff’s office said the work truck was puffing when it was stolen from in front of a home in unincorporated Adams County.

“He came out to start his truck and went back inside to put his work boots on and have a cup of coffee,” said Brian Madill, the roommate of the truck’s owner. “He came back and it was gone.”

The truck was equipped with a GPS device and deputies were able to locate it quickly.

Deputies chased the truck, but the suspect was driving so erratically that they called it off. The driver was going as fast a 90 mph, according to 911 communication between officers and dispatchers.

“Our office terminated due to the conditions and driving actions of the suspect,” said Sgt. Jim Morgen with the Adams County Sheriff’s Office.

The driver then ran a red light at Washington Street and East 84th Avenue, slamming into two vehicles, the sheriff’s office said. The driver in one of the vehicles was seriously injured.

Emergency crews had to use the Jaws of Life to get him out of the vehicle. A woman in the other car suffered minor injuries.

The driver of the truck escaped on foot, but he was arrested one block away. He has not been identified.
