DENVER -- A Denver restaurant earns an “F” on our Restaurant Report Card for how they were killing their flies.

Imperial Dragon on South Sheridan gets an "F" for 10 critical violations in its last two unannounced inspections.

On January 8th, inspectors found an “insect electrocution device (without a catch basin) ... hung above soy sauce” and “operator observed handling raw chicken then handling a container of egg rolls without washing his hands.”

The Denver health inspector also found “hands not washed as needed” and that the manager failed to demonstrate knowledge of food safety and proper hand washing.

The kitchen was so dirty inspectors ordered the staff to deep clean the facility or face closure.

The owner refused our request for an interview, but told us that “all violations have been fixed.” The restaurant passed its follow up inspection on January 24, 2014 with no violations.

Our second “F” of the week goes to Casa De Bonilla for 12 critical violations during its most recent unannounced inspections on October 22, 2013 and July 20, 2012.

During the October routine inspection, a Tri-County Health inspector found “rodent droppings … below the hand sink and shelf … in the blue serving area.”

Also, the dish washing machine was not sanitizing and several areas of the kitchen were dirty and soiled.

A person who identified himself as the manager refused to talk to us and gave us a hand written statement that said, “All the violations were corrected within 24 hours.” The restaurant passed a follow up inspection in November.

The “A+” is awarded to Jus Cookin’s Restaurant in Lakewood for no health code violations in its last two inspections. This restaurant located at 840 Tabor Street deserves the grade for not having a single violation for 3 years.

General Manager Larry Wheeler credits the owners and the staff for caring about their customers and the food they serve.

“It really is a culture that you build into the restaurant and everybody helps participate with that and we take an awful lot of price in it … it’s a big effort … to be recognized for that is a real honor,” Wheeler said.

How Restaurants Appear on our Report Card

Restaurant Report Card features health inspections in the city and county of Denver, Jefferson County and restaurants under the jurisdiction of the Tri-County Health Department. The Tri-County Health Department includes Adams, Arapahoe and Douglas counties.

An inspection is a “snapshot” of what is happening during the day and time of the inspection. On any given day, a restaurant could have more or fewer violations than noted in an inspection. Also, at the time of an inspection, violations are recorded and can be corrected prior to the inspector leaving the restaurant. If violations are not corrected, a follow-up inspection is scheduled.

The criteria FOX31 uses to give a restaurant a failing grade includes the evaluation of two unannounced inspections by county health inspectors. A failing restaurant must have 5 critical violations on their most recent regular inspection and 5 critical violations on the previous regular inspection. Health inspectors may conduct critical or follow-up inspections, due to the number of critical violations found during a regular inspection. Those inspections may also be considered for our reports. We recognize restaurants with two perfect regular inspections in a row by awarding them an A.
