DENVER — At just shy of one-month-old, baby Chet is cornering the market on cuteness.

He has his parents, Samantha and Kyle Smith of Castle Rock, wrapped around his tiny finger.

Samantha says, “It’s the best thing that’s ever happened to us.”   Kyle says the couple has wanted to have kids since they’ve been together and Chet is their miracle.  Their son is receiving treatment at the Rocky Mountain Hospital for Children after being born with eyelids but not actual eyes underneath.

The cause is a rare disease called Anopthalmia, which affects one in every 250,000 infants.

Samantha says, “It is definitely a hard road. Something pretty unexpected. I thought they would just put him on my chest and we would go home the next day.”

Chet must also undergo a series of surgeries to correct blockage that is preventing him from being able to breathe properly.  Doctors say the baby will  eventually need more surgery to ensure his quality of life, including prosthetics for his eyes.

Dr. David Horst, who is on Chet’s medical team,  says, “That’s going to be a long term process because he’ll grow over the next several years and that’ll be a process that grows with him.”

Chet’s father says he cherishes the blessing of being a father and vows to provide his son with all the love and support he can.  He says, “We just want him to lead as normal of a life as possible.”

Family and friends want to help pay the family’s medical costs.

They’ve set up this donation page so the community can help out.

Samantha says she and her husband are deeply touched by the outpouring of support and adds, “To have him be part of the community and have people love him and pray for him, it’s really neat.”
