AURORA, Colo. -- In a nutshell, it’s as if The Home Depot and Goodwill joined forces.

But they didn’t. It’s the newest Habitat for Humanity ReStore in Aurora, a second-hand home improvement outlet. It's at 1640 S. Abilene St.

“We take donated material and then we turn around and resell it and 100 percent of the profits go right back in investing in our local community here for Habitat,” Habitat for Humanity chief  retail officer Ryan Smith said.

Furniture, appliances, cabinets, tools, toys and more are all selling for 50 percent to 80 percent off retail prices.

About 90 percent of the inventory in the 14,000-square-foot retail store is donated; the rest is purchased new.

“The things we buy new are carpets, faucets, and certain tools and paint,” Smith said.

All proceeds from sales go back into Habitat for Humanity Denver.

“ReStores account for about 30 percent of the fundraising for Habitat for Humanity here in metro Denver. It’s a great source, a regular source of reoccurring revenue for us year after year," Smith said.

In addition to keeping more money in your wallet, there is less material that goes to the dump.

“We’re able to keep out about 90 tons a week out of the waste stream.  So that’s about 80 tons a week we sell to customers that wasn’t thrown out,” Smith said.

Home improvement isn’t normally fun, but with the money you save, you can throw a pretty cool completion party.
