GREELEY, Colo. -- Two parole officers discovered a body inside a trunk while making an unannounced home visit at a parolee's home Wednesday afternoon, the Greeley Police Department said.
The body was of a woman, found inside a chest-type trunk in a closet in an apartment in the 1400 block of Ninth Avenue, police said.
A parolee at the residence, 53-year-old David Wayne Batty, was arrested and taken to the Weld County Jail. He was being held on parole violations. Batty has a history of domestic violence, police said.
On Friday, the Weld County Coroner's Office identified the woman as 47-year-old Tonya Lei Webster of Greeley.
“Makes you wonder who is walking around in your neighborhood for things like this to be going on,” neighbor Susan Montgomery said.
“You have a murder next door and it kind of takes you out of that disillusion that you have of everything is fine," neighbor Matthew Fortier said.
Most neighbors said Batty largely kept to himself after moving into the basement apartment a couple months ago. Most didn’t know he had recently served time for assault and that he had a history of domestic violence.
Investigators have yet to identify the woman or explain what relationship they might have had. Batty has not been charged in connection with the woman's death. Police said it remains an active investigation.
“They said that they got him and they’re pretty sure it’s him so I’m not going to stop living my life or live in fear," a neighbor said.
The investigation into Webster's death continues.
