GOLDEN, Colo. -- A man died shortly after police officers took him into custody Tuesday in Golden and an investigation was launched.
The city of Golden said in a news release that police were called to the area of Pine Ridge Road and Highway 93 about 10:15 a.m. to help with U.S. Marshals in the arrest of a 51-year-old man who had violated parole in Maryland.
"When officers arrived at his place of employment, the suspect was seen fleeing the area on foot," the news release said.
The suspect, who worked at Gunslinger Custom paint shop, was a convicted sexually violent predator with a long criminal history.
"Two other officers who were in the area working on an unrelated incident came upon the suspect as he was walking away and told him to stop," according to the news release. "The suspect walked toward the officers and did not do as he was ordered. The officer put him in an arm restraint taking him to the ground in order to handcuff him."
The suspect was then placed on the curb where he sat and spoke to officers. He was moved into the back seat of a patrol car.
After a few minutes, the suspect was sweating profusely and became unresponsive but still breathing. An ambulance was summoned and he was transported to St. Anthony Hospital, where he died, the news release said.
The suspect had pre-existing medical conditions that contributed to his death, the news release said.
"It does not appear that his death was caused by being taken into custody," the statement said.
The Jefferson County District Attorney's Office and the Golden Police Department are investigating the incident.
