GREELEY, Colo. — A Weld County jury on Thursday found a former funeral director guilty of claiming to have helped poor families with funeral expenses, when in fact he was keeping money for himself.

Paul Acuna, 45, filed false funeral contracts while working as director of Paul’s Funeral Service and Cremation, the Weld County District Attorney’s Office said.

The contracts claimed that he provided low-income families with burial services at a reduced cost, which made him eligible for reimbursement from Weld County. Instead, Acuna charged the families full price, and then also kept the payments from the county, the jury found.

In all, Acuna defrauded the county of $13,589, the jury found.

A sentencing hearing has not yet been scheduled.
