FREDERICK, Colo. -- A family is on high alert after someone riddled their house with bullets a little more than a week ago. It happened Aug. 21 just inside Frederick town limits.
The Weber family wasn't home at the time, but Melissa Weber said she instantly noticed something on her living room wall when she walked through the door.
At first, she thought it was an insect.
"I happened to look across the room when I walked through the door and I said (to my husband) kill the spider because that's what it looked like," she said.
It was actually one of six bullet holes. Two of the bullets traveled through the home.
"My first thought that went through my head was thank God everybody was gone because both my husband and stepson are over 6 feet tall and it probably would have killed them instantly," Weber said.
Police are still looking for suspects and have yet to identify a motive, but they don't believe the Webers were targeted. In November, a nearby church, was also riddled with bullets.
"We've still got several bullet holes in the walls. One's obviously bigger than a .22. That's a serious bullet. That would kill somebody," Tri-Town Baptist Church pastor Don Veazey said.
No one was inside the gymnasium when the shots were fired. Veazey chalked it up to a one-time occurrence until he learned Tuesday what had happened to the church's neighbors.
Veazey said he coincidentally saw a man Saturday in a field behind the church shooting at a dog that was chasing his horses. He's not sure if the man is responsible for the damage to the Webers' home.
In the meantime, Veazey said his church will also be on high alert.
"We saw these bullets in our church and now this happens close by. It's become a concern. Are we safe in our own building?" Veazey said.
It's a concern shared by Melissa Weber.
"Whoever did this, we weren't thinking and think first before you do something you're going to regret," she said. "I don't feel like I'm a target, but kind of I do. I just want to understand why."
Anyone with information is asked to call the Frederick Police Department or the Weld County Sheriff's Office.
