FORT COLLINS, Colo. -- A Fort Collins police officer was shot Sunday while responding to a welfare check at an apartment complex, police said.
The male officer responded about 3:45 p.m. to an apartment complex at Drake and Shields, police said. A male suspect laying on the ground reportedly pulled a gun on the officer and fired, hitting the officer at least once.
The officer returned fire and struck the suspect. Multiple shots were fired in total. Initial reports indicated that the officer had been hit in a bullet-resistant vest, but FCPD did not confirm this.
The officer was hospitalized and expected to survive. The suspect was also hospitalized and has since died.
