EL PASO COUNTY, Colo. – Nine Fort Carson soldiers were rescued near the summit of Pikes Peak Saturday after becoming stranded by weather and health-related complications, according to El Paso County Search and Rescue representative Steve Sperry.

The soldiers, who were located about a mile from the summit, were suffering from various stages of hypothermia and one soldier had a fractured a leg.

According to Fort Carson spokeswoman Lori Waters, the Fort Carson soldiers had been training on Pikes Peak Saturday. The name of the Army unit involved hasn’t been released.

El Paso County and Teller County rescue teams were able to reach the stranded soldiers after a brief break in the weather. The teams guided the group to a helicopter landing zone, where a CH47 military helicopter was able to land.

The helicopter flew out around 10 p.m. and the soldiers requiring medical help were then transported by ground to Memorial Hospital.
