DENVER – A firefighter was injured trying to put out the flames of a house fire in Montbello early Sunday morning.

Denver police and fire crews responded to a fire on Atchinson Way just after 2:30 a.m.

Phil Champagne with the Denver Fire Department said that when a firefighter entered the second floor of the house, the ceiling and the floor started to collapse. The firefighter climbed out a window to escape the fire, and he was treated for a minor cut and burns on the scene, according to Champagne.

Police said there was extensive damage to the home. There were no other injuries reported.

Neighbors said the homeowner was out of town at the time for his son's funeral.

Investigators are still trying to find out what caused the fire. According to Denver police dispatch, flames were reported to have been coming from the back side of the house near the porch.
