LAKEWOOD, Colo. -- Twelve people were evacuated Wednesday morning, one person was injured and a unit was destroyed after a fire broke out in an apartment building, West Metro Fire said.

The fire happened at the Quiet Creek Apartments in the 6400 block of West 13th Avenue on 13th Avenue near Lamar Street, about two blocks from Lakewood Country Club.

Firefighters arrived at 4:30 a.m. to a fully involved first-floor apartment and had the fire under control 10 minutes later.

All residents were able to self-evacuate and one resident suffered minor smoke inhalation, officials said. Firefighters rescued two cats from a separate unit and gave them oxygen. They were returned to their owner.

Resident Britney Bell said her husband ran into a room and told her there was a fire, and they and their daughter safely escaped.

Most residents were allowed to return to their units. The cause of the fire is under investigation, but officials said it's possibly related to smoking. One unit was deemed a total loss.
