MORRISON, Colo. -- Three people escaped unharmed after a fire caused by unattended burning candles broke out at a historic bed-and-breakfast in Morrison early Thursday morning, West Metro Fire Rescue said.
The fire started about 5 a.m. in the basement of the Horton House Bed and Breakfast at 105 Canon St. Several crews were on the scene battling the fire in the home that was built in 1869.
Firefighters said there was a partial collapse of the roof and that it was a difficult fire to fight because of renovations over the years. The home suffered major damage and is likely a complete loss. No injuries were reported to firefighters.
Lorene Stadig, the daughter of the bed-and-breakfast's owner Lila Horton, said one of the people staying in the home called firefighters after smoke detectors went off. Stadig's mother and cousin were also inside the home and managed to get out unharmed.
Stadig said her grandmother purchased the home in 1942 and turned it into the first Mexican restaurant in Denver. Stadig's mother later turned it into a bed-and-breakfast.
"This dwelling has been ... it's just a memorable place," Stadig said. "People always know, when you talk about the Horton Bed and Breakfast they know exactly where it's at. It's just really sad. My mom just gives so much to this community and this is her livelihood. And there are times when people don't have a place to stay, she'll put them up ... at no cost. She just gives back."
The cause of the fire is under investigation.
A GoFundMe page has been established to help pay for the damage to the home. The GoFundMe page said Horton did not have insurance on the home.
