ADAMS COUNTY, Colo. — The father of a 3-month-old who died in 2013 of severe head trauma pleaded guilty to child abuse charges Thursday.

Martin Fernando Holguin, Jr., 25, pleaded guilty to felony child abuse resulting in death, said Sue Lindsay of the 17th Judicial District Attorney’s Office.

The incident happened in September. According to his arrest affidavit, Holguin admitted to head-butting the child in anger when the baby wouldn’t stop crying.

He reported hitting the child above the right ear, which is where doctors discovered a fatal skull fracture, the affidavit said.

Holguin said he did not intend to hurt his son, the affidavit said.

The guilty plea means he faces a stipulated sentence of 20 to 32 years in prison. Holguin will be sentenced March 18.
